This wasn’t a usual occurrence for the two most hard working trainees in YG. Somehow, after a series of trenching exercises, they’d been given some sort of leeway. Normally, both of them would be batching it on their respective work places, working on songs where Jennie struggled to make anything at all and Hanbin was troubled with getting rid of excesses. But today they were together. The young lady enjoyed this probably more than he did. For one, he’d be a good source for inspiration because not only did he have ideas but his company also delighted her. Even though a friend once said they needed some sort of swooning to create music conveniently, of course, she’d hope this was all platonic. She wished. That was the problem.

The rooftop, though a common resting place for many artists part of the company, was surprisingly occupied by none but them. Everyone else were probably rejoicing too much that they’d aim for places far from the wretched ‘dungeon’ as they called it. Jennie would, too. Maybe visit some friends she hadn’t seen in a while but this was… a tad nicer if she were going to be honest. “Well, why are we so quiet, though?” She finally broke the unusual silence between them, a nervous chuckle following along. Hanbin being quiet wasn’t new, but for Jennie to be as well was a whole different story. “How’s the stuff you’ve been working on? You haven’t been deleting stuff, have you?”

Three high-powered machine guns and silencers, valued at $12,000. It was all that it took for the friendship she’d invested on for half of her life to be thrown straight out the window. But she had to or else she’d be busted. It was a life and death kind of situation. Damned if she did, damned if she didn’t. A boring life in the suburbs, on the other hand, sounded better than her flesh rotting and buried six feet under ground. Itaewon. Foreign-centric popular expat area south of the river, they said. Her foreign background immediately made her bite on the bait. That sounded great even if it meant she had to say goodbye to her priced fighter jet.

She’d subsequently flipped and turned government witness, and having her platonic “Clyde” partner arrested; his house raided, windows broken, stun grenades lobbed inside, and knocking down the front door, turning up more unlawful pistols and rifles. Poor guy, indeed. With someone as powerful, however, it didn’t take long until she’s pinned down by several more men who backed him up. Another threat to her life, nothing new. She wasn’t all too spooked. It only meant her rebirth would come sooner. A lot of precautions, they warned. To her it just meant she had to be self-sufficient this time.

This was her second shot at life. More of a reincarnation than a redemption, if one would add. She’d fallen off the face of the planet, total anonymity but now she’s met with new people. Sitting next to them, she was in silence, observing and plotting on how she could betray the unfamiliar faces, of course. Despite the fresh start all of them has been given, she’s pretty sure their past transgressions aren’t completely ignored. Not that anyone would ever tell. They had to act like a family, after all. But the last thing any of them could do is to trust another. They all had something similar and it was awful. “Well, is anyone gonna introduce themselves? We’re a family, aren’t we?”

Jennie had no idea why Cola entrusted her to put up a stage with him. It wasn’t that she doubted her talents but she wasn’t famous at all. She had fans here and there; a small group, and it was because she was still just a trainee. There was a broad miscellany of female rap artists that could showcase it better than her. More known and legitimate, too. It was odd how she was chosen. Were they that close as friends? If she was being honest, she didn’t think so but it only lead her to be grateful of the offer. Maybe it was the jokes. She’d been talking about how she wanted to do some features and collaborations time and again. It was only natural. She wanted to do this. So bad, even. The delay of their debut only makes the desire stronger.

It’s been sometime since she’d been on a real stage and although she’s been through routines of exercises to make her more comfortable on one all these years, the jitters wasn’t exactly easy to get rid off. Easier said than done. “Should we go over it again? I feel like I’m gonna mess this up.” She asserted, after a while of anxious walking back and forth as she practiced her lyrics.

Jennie would often scribble on her skin and pretend they’re tattoos to liven herself up in the most jaded of times. Having piercings were one thing, and it didn’t make much of a statement anymore. Everyone had it. Ink, on the other hand, seemed like a bigger deal at her age. People would fuss about it. Her selcas, for example, where she had marks drawn on had gotten attention from her fans not knowing they weren’t real. And so, she decided on visiting a certain tattoo shop she’d passed by a few times. It seemed to have been around for quite a while but not so much as to be old. It was the sketchy side of Gangnam. It might have been not the wisest choice but it intrigued her endlessly, as if it was a vortex sucking her in.

She’d heard the voices once again, stopping her from a new feat she’d been planning to do for a while now. Her conscience, was it? A ghost? Was she imagining things? She’s yet to figure out until now. But since it’s been far too long when these ‘a bit less mundane’ events started transpiring, it’s not that weird for her anymore, so for once, she goes against it. The place seemed a lot dour than she’d imagine, but in a good way. The attractive kind. It was a scene the likes of which Tim Burton would sit rapt in awe, beer in hand. It’s like a cave that an artist has been living out of for a year, which makes sense. They’re called tattoo artists for a reason. It’s a cozy space, either way. Should be enough to keep her at ease during the session.

She was met by a male that looked about six foot tall, at least next to Jennie. He didn’t look like he was a local. Spoke Korean fluently but in an accent familiar to her. She could only assume he was multi-lingual like her. Japanese, maybe? That’s what he looked closest to. Okay, but she was getting too preoccupied trying to analyze her apparent tattooist; not what she came for. “Hello…” she muttered too softly, it was almost inaudible. She fiddled with her fingers nervously. She felt small, for some reason. Well, she was small but that’s a different issue. Suddenly, she wanted to back out but at the same time, time was a luxury she couldn’t afford to waste. “Uh, so… I wanted to get a tattoo?”

It’s no lie that she must have been a nuisance to Jackson by now, but for the female, there was nothing else to talk about. They were on that awkward stage of friendship or maybe it’s more a one-sided feeling. Either way, talking about her favorite restaurant was all she did but despite that setback, it became the opportunity for them to hang out. That’s one good thing out of the many, but it can’t be that bad, right?

Jackson seemed like a genuine person. It helped that he was funny. It’d salve the anxiousness out of her because even though it wasn’t a date, they had no mutual friends to tag along to justify that. He was an attractive young man but Jennie hadn’t that sort of interest in him and she didn’t wanna send off the wrong connotation. Nothing to ruin the blossoming friendship, she hopes.

They’d come together since the newly acquainted male didn’t know the whereabouts and Jennie didn’t want him fumbling around the streets trying to look for the place. It wasn’t very popular, after all. She got lost herself the first time someone asked to meet up with her at the certain restaurant. As soon as they stepped in, familiar faces greeted them with friendly smiles, brief chit chats between Jennie here and there, checking up on how she’d been in the times she hasn’t visited the favored place.

“Well, here it is! People here are really nice, aren’t they?” said Jennie, full of confidence about the place she’d been yapping about to no end, before walking towards the table they’d been lead to.

“Can you say that again? You’re starting to what?” She yanked on his chain like there was no tomorrow. She hadn’t stopped since he mentioned about his unusual feelings of tenderness. If Jennie could put it into words, she would say it was distastefully charming she could punch him in the face out of disgust mixed with awe. “Oh, Yun-chan~ you can be so cute sometimes. Soooo cute.”

“Netizens be beezy, I tell ya. I can attest to this.” It was all she could say after reading hurtful comments on Jisoo’s weight on her recent appearances in Producer. She was perplexed by how distasteful people can be to have even Jisoo, their most loved member, the subject of hate. Having been almost the very essence of criticism and, more harshly, of accusation, she’d been a victim of the citizens of the Interwebs. At least international fans were a bit more accepting but her own country’s audiences were extensively critical. “You’re lucky. I don’t think I’ve ever heard anything bad said about you. Besides the very loyal fans from before that didn’t want a new member in Kara to begin with, that is.”

On such a beautiful day, she’d gone out by herself just for a stroll. Sundays were the only day she didn’t lock herself inside the ‘dungeon’ and she’d decided a better way to spend it without spending money, stress free! The park might have been a typical place, with a possible crowd mainly consisting of couples, but it was a place no one would recognize her for sure.

Jennie, even as a trainee, had people following her wherever she went. Each time she would check on the Internet, she would find candid photos of her taken by fans. And for that reason, she felt grateful just for the fact that she was able to indulge in this moment with just her own. Days in the studio had exhausted her enough to the point that even the comfort of friends was suffocating for her. Besides, they hadn’t been the best listeners for a while.

For some reason, Jennie always had visions of things and events that she doesn’t have a complete memory of. She had accidents when she was little, getting bumped in the head being one, but she was never truly forgetful. At least not forgetful enough to the point of something alike with amnesia. It was mainly in her dreams but it left her a feeling in her bones every time she woke up.

They had been happening more recently that she had to share to her friends about it but each time she would speak of it, she would only be met with laughter. “Maybe a stranger would understand better.” She mused out loud, leaning against the bench and she let her arms stretch before folding them around herself.

Contrary to her rouge nature, Jennie was undoubtedly in favor of the better. Despite her ‘careless’ deeds, she had a great sense of responsibility and moral virtue. How she had turned the behavior into restrain was all simply because she had a dream and it could only be achieved with discipline.

However, for the several times she’d been unfortunate to end up in a sticky situation, she has managed to get herself in another just as though she were cursed to go through her time on earth as the center point of danger zone, or rather the personification of it. She knew at first glance there was something suspicious about this boy and she tried to avoid what was coming, but curiosity got the better of her.

She side-stepped closer to the busybodies talking in whispers, her back rubbing against the wall. Her alert eyes fixated on the shadows but what she forgot was a crucial factor of sneaking. A few more small steps and her foot collided with a trashcan, making a loud enough noise for her to be noticed. Eyes shut tightly, she bit her lip then gasped for air. “Oh my gosh,” she whispered. It was a mistake to take this road, thought Jennie.

Now it was unusually quiet. She glanced left and right to make sure they were truly gone. A sigh of relief begone the regret she had within her the moment she confirmed she was alone. At least now, she knew not to be nosy over something that seemed sketchy. But perhaps it was too late for that realization. Who knows where he came from and how he did it so quietly, but a man now stood in front of her, seemingly the same one she’d followed to this dark alley.

“Ackk!” she exclaimed, her palms smashing against the wall by reflex. She was too nervous to even feel pain from the impact. “Jesus–” her widened eyes met his own. They were bloodshot, glaring so furiously that she could feel his stare seeping through her skin and into her soul. “I didn’t see anything! I have no idea what you were doing there, I swear! Don’t hurt me!”

Jennie, too, was once an outcast. Being an immigrant had put her through struggles at a young age. Fitting in wasn’t as easy as people could think it to be and even more so, getting judged for the tradition she’d grown accustomed to, simply for having an upbringing remotely different to the foreign country’s own, was more than what she could take. On top of it all, she was accused of being the tyrant.

Meeting a guy with the moniker of ‘Nike Boy’ was a blessing in disguise. They related to each other in many ways. Besides the fact that they spoke a familiar tongue, they were both immersed in the art of lyrical writing. For a big company like YG, with high expectations for their artists, she had to keep up and learn how to produce her own songs including those for her upcoming group. She was the possible leader, after all. This wasn’t her strongest suit which was why she had so much admiration for Namgi.

His confidence and popularity didn’t match up to how much talent he had in him. They had been acquainted for a good while and it was one she treasured. A person who always contributed to her growth was someone that was worth keeping, truly, it was. However, for no reason explained she was reprimanded for this friendship. It was nothing new to the aspiring musician. Besides the occasional hang outs with friends who were trainees as well, anyone beyond that standard profile would have an automatic no for permission.

Sneaking off was already second nature to the young lady. She thought, if anything, being surrounded by akin talents could only be a benefit to her. So, why bother? It was a mystery to her. But soon enough, these thoughts were coming to be enlightened with what a unique way but anonymous mixtapes being sent her way. Her phone had been confiscated and he must have tried contacting her in any way possible which lead to this, she presumes. She knew no one else but this person to come up with such a creative method of communication.

“How do I even reply to this?” the astounded Jennie wondered aloud, bopping her head back and forth slowly to the wistful beat she didn’t expect to hear. It was soothing but in a way, it felt like there was a hidden message. She was unsure of what he was trying to convey with the sample, but she knew it was a code for something.

She spent hours figuring out a way to reach back to the male, and though she was at odds of having to make an actual song, inspiration got her through the long moonless night with a piece worthy of their boss’s approval for release — but that would defeat the purpose of divulging. With a click! on the send button, she leaned back on her reclining chair, letting out a sigh of relief as she hopes for it to get to her friend immediately and low-key satisfied of herself for the outcome.
