Jennie didn’t expect presents on Christmas other than money she would get yearly from her parents but the thoughtful Jisoo went through the trouble of sending her some all the way from Busan. She intended to only give her a cheap bracelet she’d bought some time ago. One for her own, and another one for no one, or maybe someone she hadn’t met yet. She’d always wanted to own friendship bracelets but ever since moving from abroad back to South Korea, she had no idea who she would have these with. Upon meeting Jisoo, however, it reminded her of the ornament that has been left in her drawers to dust.
But looking through the friend’s gifts, she felt it wasn’t enough. Harassing their driver to drop her off at her parents’, she came to steal one of his dad’s fine wines on his mini bar. Some of those that he had back from when they were in New Zealand. Knowing her father and how precious the possessions were, he would definitely go ballistic on her once he finds out but she thought it was worth the hassle. On her ride back to the dorm, she still couldn’t elude the recurring idea that it wasn’t enough. She could still come up with something more, wouldn’t she? What she had by then was just too weak compared to what her friend inconvenienced herself to do.
“Ah!” she thought out loud, her index finger raised in the air. “What was that?” The driver, who was—by a reasonable assumption—startled by her sudden outburst, inquired. “Can we go to Insadong, please? I know it’s Christmas day and you just want to get a break from me. I’ve bothered you the most, I know. It’s okay. No need to deny but I promise, I’ll be very quick!” She exclaimed, her body quivering from excitement over her genius idea which was only answered by a chortle. He doesn’t seem to talk much. Recalling how her friend wanted a fountain pen she couldn’t afford and assuming her more financially secured acquaintances had probably given her this present, she decided a quill would be closest to what the female wanted.
Arriving at the neighborhood, she scurried through shops briskly until she finally spotted a store that looked like one that sells office supplies, or something close. She jogged towards the counter, careful enough not to bump on anything. Much to her advantage, it was as if the owner knew what she was looking for; right on the desk was a quill set he’d just placed down after another customer came by to give it a look. Lucky for her, they didn’t go through the purchase. “Oh!! Perfect!! Is this for sale?!” She voiced out, eyeing the writing implement as she fought the urge to grab it and claim it her own’s. But of course, it was for sale. Though, from her excitement, it was probably sold for a larger amount than it originally was but she didn’t bother stressing about it since she’s got what she needed.
Stopping by a few more stores, she found items she could give to the rest of the people she thought of sending a present to. Although, it wasn’t the plan to do so at all, Jisoo’s kindness reminded her that she should, at least to the people she cared for. Back at the dorm, she laid out all the contents of Jisoo’s package, scanning through it, preceding to putting them in place. Before shipping it to the address Jisoo gave, for final touches, she decided to include a hand-written letter instead of a tiny Christmas card along with the present, knowing well she would appreciate the gesture:
Dear Jisoo,
Here goes. Oh, hello. I don’t know what to write here. I’m sorry, I’m not poetic enough to write you a decent love letter like I intended to before my hand started to involuntarily write these few words right here. Is that even possible? I’m saying non-sense but hi. You’re the first one (and maybe last) person to drop me a gift and I could care less about receiving anything else because I’m satisfied with just this plus my parents gave me money. ㅋㅋㅋ And you triggered the idea of my giving gifts to some people I didn’t plan on giving so, that’s real awesome. And you even bought me such an expensive gift… wow!! You’re a pimp. You’re my new idol, I swear. It’s as if you know me best despite us knowing each other just for a short period of time. For that short period of time, though, a lot has happened. I can’t even begin to explain how crazy that is and I can’t probably fit in this space all the things I wanna tell you. I’m gonna try to keep it short….
I’m not gonna lie, I snorted when I saw that necklace but then again, in this box thingy is something equally ‘ghei’ which I hope you like. It doesn’t look fancy or anything but it holds a special meaning for me and I want you to have it more than anyone else because you’re my bae. It’ll be the thingy that should remind us of our friendship and yes awesome. I love you, my friend. I’ve told you that in person already, right? I don’t know why I feel shy writing that down.
Oh, be careful with the box, by the way. Something inside is fragile and.. I kinda stole it? You better like it or I’m gonna have a panic attack. I added that there so you can let loose sometimes. You work so many jobs, I don’t know how you even survive so there you go. Also, as thoughtful as I am like always, I bought you bottled waters (they were on sale!!) enough to push it all out after in-taking that stuff. It’s heavy, right? ㅋㅋㅋ It’s hard to write about it without spoiling what it is, you know that? Unless you opened it before reading my letter which is just… I don’t know how I’d feel about that. ㅠㅡㅠ The effort.
Last thing!! The fountain pen thing you wanted was so expensive so I don’t know. I couldn’t get you what you really wanted but I got something close enough. I hope you like it!! I don’t know much about writing and literature and all that stuff. You can get me to read (preferably manga or just magazines) but nothing more than that so, I really squeezed my brain out for ideas to give you something relevant. I hope you like all of it or even just one thing out of the things I gave you. Merry Christmas, Jisoo! Have a safe trip back. I miss you. Let’s celebrate New Year’s together~ ♡
With love,
Jennie
